Can Maxey’s Magic Rescue Philadelphia Again?

Philadelphia appeared finished before halftime, but a defensive correction and a composed second-half performance transformed the night. The 76ers erased a 29-point deficit and defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 on Thursday at Xfinity Arena.

The comeback became the largest in 76ers history during the play-by-play era and the biggest lead Cleveland has surrendered in that span. It also marked the most substantial comeback of LeBron James’s 24-year NBA career.

Cleveland Controlled the Opening Half

The Cavaliers dictated the game early through Donovan Mitchell and their mid-pick-and-roll attack. Cleveland built its advantage to 29 points, with Mitchell scoring 30 through three quarters before Philadelphia finally found an effective response.

Philadelphia’s first-half problems were not limited to shooting. The 76ers committed 15 turnovers before the interval, giving Cleveland repeated opportunities to run in transition. Their crowd responded with loud boos as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Nick Nurse used the break to alter the defensive assignments. Cleveland had run 27 direct picks in the opening half and averaged 1.08 points on those possessions. After halftime, the Cavaliers used that action 20 times but managed only 0.56 points per possession.

Philadelphia Turned Defence into Momentum

The adjustment gave the 76ers a chance to build pressure without constantly chasing the scoreboard. Cleveland scored 69 points before halftime but managed only 37 afterward. Philadelphia, meanwhile, reduced its turnovers from 15 to just two in the second half.

The third quarter supplied the first major shift. The 76ers opened with an 8-0 run and won the period 37-21. Although they still entered the fourth quarter eight points behind, the game no longer felt out of reach.

Mitchell’s impact also disappeared at the crucial moment. After carrying Cleveland for three quarters, he scored only two points in the fourth, and both came after the result had effectively been decided.

Maxey and Embiid Completed the Turnaround

Tyrese Maxey directed the comeback with 32 points and six assists. One of his defining moments came in transition when he received a pass from James and immediately launched a three-pointer. The shot forced Cleveland to call timeout, while Maxey turned toward the crowd and celebrated with an intensity that matched the building’s changing mood.

Joel Embiid provided the decisive push late in the fourth. With 6:54 remaining, he knocked down a 16-foot jumper over Jarrett Allen to give Philadelphia its first lead of the game. The 76ers stayed ahead from there, with Embiid finishing with 24 points.

James added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jaylen Brown contributed 21 points and eight rebounds. Maxey and Brown each scored in the final minute to secure the victory.

The result carried emotional weight beyond the box score. Embiid said the team refused to fold as some previous Philadelphia groups might have, while rookie guard VJ Edgecombe called the atmosphere the best he had experienced professionally.

James offered the most practical lesson afterward. A comeback of this size can inspire confidence, but it cannot become a strategy. Philadelphia survived because Nurse found the right defensive answer, the ball stopped being handed away, and Maxey and Embiid delivered when the opportunity arrived.
